Currently, I am leading my annual cherry blossom photo tour, and we are visiting the iconic Matsumoto Castle in Nagano, Japan. Completed in the 16th century, this historic samurai castle was ruled by 23 lords of Matsumoto for nearly 300 years before undergoing a complete renovation during the Meiji Era.
As you explore the castle grounds, you’ll understand why Matsumoto Castle is nicknamed ‘Karasujo’ or ‘Crow Castle’—its deep ebony walls and towering architecture resemble outstretched wings, symbolizing the power of the samurai lords. Surrounding the castle are more than 300 Somei Yoshino sakura trees (Prunus yedoensis), creating a breathtaking scene of pink and white blossoms against the striking black castle walls.
Having explored this area countless times, I have mapped out the best spots for participants to photograph cherry blossoms while experiencing the samurai-era atmosphere of the castle. Both day and night, we immerse ourselves in Japanese culture—enjoying traditional music, delicious food, and authentic tea ceremonies that perfectly complement the magical ambiance of cherry blossom season.
