Hokkaido, Japan’s enchanting northern island, offers a rich tapestry of cultural heritage and stunning natural beauty. Our 2026 Hokkaido Photography Workshops invite you to explore this extraordinary land, where the stories of the Ainu people and the island’s diverse wildlife come alive through your lens.
Embracing the Legacy of the Ainu: Japan’s Indigenous People
The Ainu are an essential part of Japan’s history, having been pushed north from mainland Japan to Hokkaido long before and after the Heian Period (794-1185). Their resilience and cultural identity faced immense challenges, but today, they are recognized as Japan’s indigenous population. During JDS Hokkaido workshops, we visit the Akanko Ainu Kotan villages, where you’ll experience the Ainu’s rich traditions, from their exquisite handicrafts to their mesmerizing folklore. These immersive encounters provide a unique opportunity to connect with the First Nations people of Japan and capture the essence of their vibrant heritage.
Wildlife Photography Like No Other: Home to the World’s Largest Owl
Hokkaido is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. Among the island’s most iconic species is the elusive Blakiston’s Fish Owl (Ketupa blakistoni), revered by the Ainu as a guardian spirit. This endangered owl is the largest in the world, with males weighing up to 8 pounds and females reaching over 10 pounds. Spotting and photographing these nocturnal hunters requires expertise and local knowledge—qualities I bring as your guide with years of experience leading Hokkaido birding workshops.
Beyond the Blakiston’s Fish Owl, Hokkaido’s wilderness offers unparalleled opportunities to photograph the Steller’s sea eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus), Ezo red foxes (Vulpes vulpes schrencki), Ezo Risu (Sciurus vulgaris orientis), a subspecies of red squirrel, and the world’s largest herd of Ezo Sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis). With a bit of luck, you might even capture the majestic whales and playful sea otters (Enhydra lutris) that grace Hokkaido’s waters.
An Unforgettable Stay in the Akanko Region
During our time in the Akanko region, we recommend staying at the Akan Tsuruga Bessou Hinanoza, a luxurious retreat that epitomizes Japanese elegance. This stunning accommodation offers a serene and indulgent experience, perfect for recharging after a day of photography and exploration. It’s a frequent choice for my private Hokkaido Photo Tours, ensuring you enjoy both comfort and authenticity during your stay.
